Week 10
It is easy to look at pop culture as a gateway to understanding relationships, love, and marriage. It is typical to compare our life to what we see in TV or the movies.
In the last week, I saw a couple things that reminded me of vows. One is the Big Bang Theory premier (spoiler alert) where Leonard and Penny get married. Pay careful attention to Leonard's vows:
Whitney was sitting right next to me as we watched this intriguing TV couple finally tie the knot. The first thing she said after Leonard spoke was spot on - "those aren't vows." Penny's were more like a vow, but they were a little lame.
Saying romantic things to your partner, reciting poetry, or proclaiming how much you love them is NOT the same thing as a vow. Those are all great things to say, but a vow goes way beyond that. A vow is a promise, an oath, to your partner. People will sometimes write their own vows. Most often, people use the traditional vows. Whitney and I went with traditional vows. A few days after watching Leonard and Penny, Whitney was watching a movie on TV called The Vow. If you have already seen it, jump to the next paragraph. If you haven't let me give you a quick synopsis. Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum's characters get married. They get in a car crash and Rachel loses her memory. Her memory of Channing is completely gone. The rest of the movie involves Channing try to build a relationship with her all over again. It came with many challenges as you might assume.
The part that I want to share is their wedding vows at the beginning of the movie (before the accident):
Remember your vow to your wife. It isn't dependent on how you feel, what kind of day you have, or what life circumstances you are in. A vow to your spouse involves a daily commitment. A vow is a commitment of actions to make to your wife. Unfortunately, millions of couples have forgotten their promises. Divorce is just an easy out. But couples that take their vows seriously will make it for the long run.
P.S. If you haven't watched The Vow, I recommend watching it with Lindsy sometime.
