Week 16
"Date night is the time to rediscover each other and let the rest of the world go on without you."
One of the signs of a long and healthy marriage is when the two people actually enjoy spending time together. Planning time with each other is easy and fun when you are dating. It should still be easy in the early time of being married before kids. But as time goes by (and kids enter the picture), setting time aside for just the two of you is not as easy as it once was.
Right now it is pretty easy to prioritize time together. But eventually life (work, family, friends, commitments, etc.) can distract us from scheduling date nights. Whitney and I haven't always had the time, money, or sitters to go out on dates. But we do what we can when we can. It has really helped our marriage stay fresh.
Having routines may work for you. Or maybe not. I worked with somebody at Progressive that was very creative in their anniversary dates. Every year on their anniversary, they went to a restaurant they have never been before. Some people get creative in where they go, what they do, and even who they go out on dates with (double dates still count). It helps bring some spontaneity in the relationship.
This piece of advice is probably more beneficial in several years than it is today. But don't get too relaxed even though you may have more time now than you will after you start having a family. Enjoy your time together now...a family will be here before you know it!
